The Belgian Investment Company for Developing countries (BIO) is a Development Finance Institution (DFI) created in 2001 in the framework of the Belgian Development cooperation to support the growth of the private sector in developing and emerging countries.

BIO finances the financial sector, businesses, and private infrastructure projects.

Function

In order to be closer to its partners, BIO has opened a local office in Abidjan in 2019. BIO is currently looking for an Investment Officer to support the development of the local office and the activities in West Africa.

As an Investment Officer in West Africa, you will assess, structure, and negotiate investments in debt and equity primarily in Enterprises and Financial Institutions, and Infrastructure projects in West Africa, in accordance with the company’s strategy.

Your duties and responsibilities include:

As an Investment Officer and BIO’s regional representative’s right-hand man in Côte d’Ivoire, the employee will contribute to the overall duties of BIO’s local office:

  1. develop an address book and conduct prospection efforts in the region (Ghana and member states of the WAEMU) in each of the activities’ priority areas (financial inclusion, agribusiness, energy, basic services to the population);
  2. identify relevant finance proposals for BIO and lead the initial stages of the investment cycle:
  1. validate the project’s concept with the Investment Department in Brussels;
  2. collect the required data in view of the project’s presentation to the first internal committee;
  3. contribute to the preparation of the admissibility approval note to be introduced to BIO’s bodies;
  1. contribute to the project evaluation and the preparation for final approval (in support of the teams in Brussels charged with the project analysis);
  2. establish a constructive dialogue with the local teams of other impact investors as well as with other business intermediaries with the aim to collaborate on investments;
  3. occasionally, support supervision of BIO’s portfolio and intervene on local problems ad hoc;
  4. represent BIO at local events, to Belgian delegations and delegations of the embassy;
  5. establish a constructive and structural dialogue with the other stakeholders of the Belgian development cooperation in the region, and look for opportunities for cooperation and synergies;
  6. inform the teams of the main office of economic, development, and sectoral problems;
  7. ensure, in collaboration with Brussels and external suppliers, good administrative management of the office.

Profile

  • Education: level Master 2 with a focus on finance, business economics and management
  • Professional experience: at least 5 years’ experience in investments (DFI, bank, fund, consultancy)
  • Languages: French (native), English (fluent)
  • Other: field experience in Africa – preferably French-speaking - (studies, work). Willing to travel regularly. Analytical (financial analyses, modelling) and interpersonal skills.
