Function

This internship gives you the opportunity to gain exposure to a broad range of legal and compliance activities within BIO’s Legal and Compliance Department.

The selected candidate will:

  • shadow BIO staff in day-to-day activities, learn about BIO, a Development Finance Institution, and its unique mission

  • develop an understanding of legal and compliance functions covering a wide range of topics, including regulatory compliance, investment-related legal work, and internal governance

Tasks and responsibilities:

  1. Contribute to legal and compliance projects, including:

  • Create or update standard documentation (templates, registers, training aids etc.) to support the compliance function, focusing on KYC, privacy, GDPR, data governance, internal ethics and compliance architecture, and processes in general, using digital tools as appropriate

  • Assist the legal department with review, improvement and standardization of legal documentation related to investment projects (debt or equity), such as non-disclosure agreements, letters of intent, term sheets, loan agreements, SPA or waivers and amendments

  • Assist the legal department with document review on ad-hoc basis, drafting internal notes and documents during the investment process

  1. Research specific corporate, financial or institutional issues (such as related to financial law, cross-border legislation, alternative investment fund management legislation, GDPR, AI or public procurement)

  1. Support the department’s knowledge management: assist in the development of the department’s information database and the maintenance of internal databases, checklists, tools, etc., participate and assist in trainings.

These tasks are performed with the guidance, and under the supervision of a (senior) legal counsel or (senior) compliance officer.

Profile

  • Students who are enrolled in a Belgian master's degree in law strongly preferred but students from related disciplines may also be considered

  • A specific interest in law, compliance and risk management, data governance, administrative, corporate, banking or finance matters

  • Fluent in either Dutch or French and good knowledge of the other language, good knowledge of English Team player, eager to learn and willing to take responsibility

  • Organized, proactive and flexible

  • Able to think out of the box, not afraid of unfamiliar circumstances
